Montana State Drivers Manual Research Practice Test

The proper procedure for leaving the curb from a parallel parked position involves signaling your intent and ensuring safety by looking over your left shoulder before pulling out into traffic. This approach is vital because it allows the driver to be aware of any oncoming traffic from the left, as well as pedestrians or cyclists that may be in the area.

By signaling, you communicate to other road users that you are about to enter the roadway, enhancing safety and promoting responsible driving behavior. This step is critical in preventing accidents or near misses. Looking over your shoulder provides a clear view of the blind spot, which cannot be seen through mirrors alone, ensuring you have a full understanding of your surroundings before merging into traffic.

In contrast, simply signaling and pulling out without looking does not take into account the potential hazards. Turning on hazard lights and checking the right side does not address the need to be aware of traffic approaching from the left, which is typically where vehicles will be coming from when merging back into traffic. Waiting for a traffic light to change is irrelevant in this context, as the procedure does not involve the manipulation of traffic signals but rather personal responsibility and awareness when leaving a parking position.
